Maybe you want to witness something different, something unusual, something extraordinary. Maybe you own an underwater camera system and want to improve your images. Maybe you just gotta see what all this Blackwater diving hype is about. Whatever your reason, Lembeh is sure to satisfy. Often considered the birthplace of muck, this small body of water known as the Lembeh Strait houses some of the most bizarre denizens on the planet. But what is muck? Simply, it’s a dive experience that defines the mud, mire, rock, rubble and volcanic sand that lay at the bottom of many dive sites. It is here where the treasures are found. Doesn’t sound like fun, huh? You have no idea. Don’t expect schooling barracuda and manta cleaning stations. Rather, critters like hairy frogfish, blue-ringed octopus and flamboyant cuttlefish are the sought after attractions. Still not excited? Perhaps some Blackwater dives will do the trick. And let’s not forget, whether we are diving day or night, it will always be 2 divers per 1 dive guide…which is like having a private dive guide at all times.

THE DIVING

DEPTH: 15′ – 90’+ (From shallow reefs to deep sandy slopes)

VISIBILITY: Generally 25′-65′

CURRENTS: Minimal

WATER TEMPERATURE: Expect 77-82°F

DIVE SEASON: Year-round, but the best time to dive is between July and October (the rainy season is November to March and dry season is July to September)

SKILL LEVEL: There’s something for every diver here, from beginner to intermediate to seasoned veteran

FEATURED CREATURES: The list of critters is way too long to include them all but the following are possible: blue-ringed octopus, mimic octopus, wonderpus octopus, long-arm octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, broadclub cuttlefish, pygmy cuttlefish, snake eels, garden eels, ribbon eels, morays eels, bobbit worms, Ambon scorpionfish, rhinopias, hairy frogfish, painted frogfish, pygmy seahorse, squid, Halimeda ghost pipefish, ornate ghost pipefish, robust ghost pipefish, flying gurnards, spiny devilfish, harlequin shrimps, mandarin fish, Bangaii cardinalfish, and nudibranchs.

Some photographers get carried away and end up taking 100 photos on a single subject. A better way would be to take fewer photos, but better quality ones. That’s where Mike and Evan come in. They will be available to discuss everything you need to know from proper, careful pre and post dive equipment maintenance, to lens selection, camera settings, strobe positioning, and more.

BLACKWATER

Blackwater diving is all the rage nowadays. It offers everything that most divers desire: the hunt for critters, the open ocean experience, and the unknown. But the challenges associated with blackwater diving are plenty, bringing another aspect to the sport of diving that separates this experience from a standard dive on reefs, wrecks or walls.

Imagine diving in the open ocean at night with only an illuminated downline for reference, a focus light, and a torch in hand to hunt with—and moving through the ink-black water, shining that torch back and forth, and trying to find a subject. Blackwater diving is challenging. It requires know how. Mike Bartick is the founder of the Blackwater Facebook group and a foremost authority on shooting micro critters in the dark. He will lead the Blackwater dives and help prepare camera systems for this unique experience.
