[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Divers usually get to the point where, after hunting all kinds of different critters, they pick their personal “obsession”. Whether these are Cephalopods, Crustaceans, Gobies, Nudibranchs or Frogfishes – so my weak spot have always been Seahorses. Here in Lembeh, we can find up to six different species on one dive![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”6426″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Seahorses do not only have a very unique shape but they are also monogamous which is very unusual compared to other fish. What’s even more rare is that the males bear the unborn young. Males are equipped with a brood pouch on their side so that the female can deposit her eggs into his pouch when mating. The male seahorse then fertilizes the eggs internally. He carries them in his pouch until they hatch and releases little miniature seahorses into the water.
Pygmy Seahorses however are unique because they are so tiny and also their morphology is quite different: unlike all other seahorse species, the embryos appear to develop in the trunk region of the female and not in the pouch of the male.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”6427″ img_size=”large” onclick=”link_image”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
