It’s the season for Ornate Ghost Pipefishes here in Lembeh! This exotic looking fish hovers head down and can usually be found in pairs or smaller groups. Most of the time Ornate Ghost Pipefishes live right next to crinoids, feather stars or soft corals. Colors can vary from black, red, yellow to white depending on the habitat.

Males appear “spikier” with their jagged edge fins and body. It is believed that all Ghost Pipefishes settle as males first. Only some then change to females at a later stage. Females are normally bigger and develop a huge brooding pouch where they can carry up to 300 eggs. Ornate Ghost Pipefishes have an annual cycle. The larval stage juveniles have a pelagic state before settling onto the reef or sand. Juveniles can be identified by their large, translucent tails with silver tips.

Ornate Ghost Pipefishes (Solenostomus paradoxus) are extremely well camouflage what makes them hard to find. However, they usually stay in a restricted home range. If you have been lucky to find one, you are likely to find them again if you go back to the same spot a few days after. Ornate Ghost Pipefishes blend in well with their host and habitat, such as feather stars, soft corals or sea fans. They feed in the current, on minuscule crustaceans which they catch from the water.

Best lens for mirrorless is Olympus 12-50mm because Ornate Ghost Pipefishes can grow up to 15cm in size. Due to the fact that they blend in perfectly with their habitats, you will have to shoot small f-stop to get the subject separated from the background. Ornate Ghost Pipefishes really do not like to be manipulated. Therefore, they are best shot by approaching slowly and keeping distance whilst they are gracefully hovering next to their host.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”9680″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” onclick=”link_image”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”9682″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” onclick=”link_image”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/NhHqMeJ-teQ”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Why Dive with NAD-Lembeh Resort?”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
